Premier Rental-Purchase franchisee Scott Kinnear opened his second store in Dayton, Ohio on November 22. A 15 year rent-to-own industry veteran, Kinnear said the success of his first location prompted him to open a second store to serve the city's east side. "It was the right time to tap the potential across town," he said.

Kinnear spent more than a decade not only managing RTO operations for a large national firm, but also as a "fixer" for troubled stores between Dayton and Columbus. He was inspired by several colleagues who became business owners and settled on a Premier Rental Purchase franchise as the vehicle.

Kinnear said Premier's flexibility in operations and buying were an important factor. He also liked the company's low start-up fees the support it offered him in getting off the ground with an effective business plan, financing support and other ongoing services such as human resources and marketing.

Kinnear opened his first store in 2005 after visiting two friends that had opened a Premier franchise. "I saw the activity and how happy they looked," he said. "I've been extremely happy about my decision to become an independent dealer and franchisee."

New store openings are easier the second time around because of Scott's focus on cultivating an engaged and experienced staff. He has been able to juggle personnel between the two stores to balance new hires with experienced employees so he can continue to devote equal time between locations.

Kinnear says he has learned many lessons over the years and one of the most important is staying involved in the business. "I like going out on the truck and being involved in store activities. I try to be more of an assistant to the managers instead of running things."

Scott says that despite the lack of sleep leading up to his recent grand opening, owning the business makes it worthwhile. "I love what I do, and I feel that the ability to succeed on my own terms rather than working for someone else is worth it."
